A cake smash photography session is a fun, joyful way to celebrate the milestone of your little one’s first birthday. This trend started in the U.S. however family from this side of the pond joined this as well! It is a great way to capture your baby’s surprise, curiosity and enjoyment into their first taste of sugar. A cake smash is a great way to express your baby’s unique personality in a relaxed and cheerful way. It always surprised me seeing kids reacting to a cake in different ways!
When a cake smash photography session takes place
If you wish to use the images as birthday invite or thank you card, make sure your session is done a month prior to your child’s birthday. This will give me enough time to deliver the images to you and for you to print and send them to your guests.
When to book a cake smash photography session
Life with new babies can be so overwhelmed and forgetful that you really need to be ahead of your schedule to get things on time. So, my advice is to book a cake smash session when your little one is 6 months old. I know he/she is just half way through, but it will give you plenty of time to get yourself organise. Also to make sure your session is booked! The last thing you need is to rush to get your baby first birthday images done at a photographer that you may not necessary like the style just because they have availability. Families that choose the ‘Milestone Package’ will have all the dates during the maternity photo session. Read about ‘How to capture your baby’s first year’
What to expect during the session
Families always asks few common questions:
- How does the cake smash photography session work?
- Do I need to bring spare cloths?
- Do I need to bring the cake?
- Do I need to bring any props?
So let me guide you through these common questions and explain my approach to cake smash
How does the cake smash photography session work?
The session is divided in 2 parts:
- The first part of the session is for the family and baby to get in front of the camera and celebrate this moment together. (before things get messy)!
- The second part is when your child will be introduce to a sugary cake for the first time in his/her life. So just step back, relax and enjoy watching your child making some funny mess!
Do I need to bring spare cloths?
Because the nature of the session it is advisable that you bring spare clothes. Things can get messy pretty quickly with these little ones.
Do I need to bring the cake?
I am happy to give you some advice in terms of cake design to best suits with the style you have in mind. As you may know, I am all about pastel and natural colours to create delicate and timeless images. As general advice, try to stay away from colours like red or brown icing as it won’t look good on your child face ;0)! When it comes to the cake, I prefer that my clients brings their own cake as everyone has different allergy and dietary requirements. So you can choose a cake that can actually enjoy after the shoot.
Do I need to bring any props?
My settings are very minimal as my goal is to focus on you as a family and on your baby’s first birthday. There is nothing better than capture that joyful little moments and too many props will take over the essence of the moment! Don’t worry about bringing any props, I will always add some classy elements in the background but still focusing on your beautiful baby!
